Review:

In 1926, during an interrogation, the secret police extracted from him the statement that during the revolution “my sympathies were entirely on the side of the White [Russians], whose retreat filled me with horror and incomprehension.” Was the statement wrung out of him in the cells? Perhaps, but it goes on with the ring of truth to say that: “I am unable to write about peasant life because I don’t like the countryside… I find it difficult to write about working-class life… it doesn’t interest me very much, the reason for this being that I am so busy.”
