In may the group unveiled plans to buy 175 aircraft from Boeing, amid claims it had managed to get such a large discount it was paying 2005 prices. About 105 older aircraft will be retired, so the average age of the fleet will reduce, making it cheaper to run. This also implies that the group will be increasing its passenger numbers by about 7pc each year over the medium term.
