Many of the early acetate recordings were in lamentable condition: they had been crammed together, greatly to the detriment of their lacquer surfaces, which smelt so frightful that the restorers working on them suffered from terrible headaches. Properly catalogued and digitised, however, they proved to contain some astonishing gems, including the earliest known recording of Churchill’s voice, in his 1909 Budget speech, made when he was 34. His voice was an unexpected light tenor, but already there were signs of the distinctive mannerisms that would become so familiar in wartime.
