His first genuinely great album, Elton John in 1970, established him not as some Tin Pan Alley hack but an eccentric original, Britain’s answer to a rootsy and poetic new wave of brilliant American troubadours like Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Leon Russell and Harry Nilsson. Only way, way more popular.
